About

Joseph Henderson, DC

doctor of chiropractic

Dr. Joe is Tar Heel born (Jacksonville, NC) and New York raised (Lynbrook, Long Island). He graduated with honors from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (now Southern California University of Health Sciences) after a prior career in Respiratory Therapy. He has been in practice in Old Town, Alexandria since 1999, and since 2016 in downtown DC.

His undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry, medical experience, and study of structural medicine have fostered his philosophy that there are many avenues to health when the body is in need. Dr. Joe’s approach to working with his patients is a combination of treatment and prevention:

  • Posture, both static (standing/sitting) and dynamic (in motion), is of primary importance. The body continually adapts to the forces placed on it, so working on proper habits is the first step to maintaining structural integrity.

  • Health and wellness is a team effort between doctor and patient. The patient spends a lot more time outside of the doctor’s office than in it. Providing patients with the tools they need to “navigate” their bodies in today’s high-tech, high-stress world of desk jobs, smartphones, tablets, and long commutes is key to making lasting changes.

  • The benefits of correcting imbalances can greatly improve long-term health and quality of life. Chiropractic care can play an integral role in helping the body accept the changes we want to make.

Dr. Joe has cycled from San Francisco to Los Angeles and twice ridden from NY to DC raising money for HIV and AIDS services and research for a cure. In addition to these fund-raising rides, he has cycled from Portland, ME, to Washington, DC over three multi-day rides, plus an additional 4 day loop around Massanutten Mountain in Shenandoah County, VA, crossing off a bucket list item of biking to the top of Skyline Drive. Stay tuned for the next adventure!

A former rower and coach with DCStrokes Rowing Club, Dr Joe currently is exploring his new passion, indoor and outdoor rock climbing.

Dr. Joe’s core belief is that if the body is supplied with the tools it needs for proper functioning it can help one achieve one’s goals. These tools include structural alignment and function, nutrition, exercise, rest, and emotional and spiritual nurturing.
